I-House is a 75.06㎡ private residence designed for a family of three consisting of a couple in their 30s and their child. The house, which looks like a simple box with a single-sloping roof, was designed to take advantage of its sloping location and carefully selected window locations so that, despite its dense location in Tokyo, the view from the hilltop is clear and the interior is bright and open with only natural light.
This unique setting is reflected in the design, which thoughtfully connects the building’s façade, the vertical flow between the first floor (featuring bedrooms and utility spaces) and the second floor (with living, dining, and kitchen areas), and the tranquil scenery framed by the windows.
Inside, every aspect of daily life has been carefully considered, from the choice of functions and furnishings to maintaining cost-efficiency without compromising on aesthetic quality. By not only designing the space but also the time spent within it, and by ensuring a continuous attention to detail throughout, the house achieves a sculptural, three-dimensional quality. This is a home that blends practicality and elegance, enriching the everyday experience with a refined artistic touch.
Spacious Living in a Compact Space:
Comfortable and Refined The placement of windows is carefully planned so that natural light is sufficient throughout the day, and the contrasts in color and materials create a sense of connection between spaces.
This establishes a balance where the minimalism of the design is complemented by visual depth and variation. The sloped ceiling and upper lighting, along with the open-plan layout, create an impression of spaciousness that feels larger than the actual floor area.
The staircase area, which extends from the entrance, includes a stage-like platform that serves multiple purposes: a decorative display area, a place for storage, or even a play area for the child.
The designer, who is also the client, brought a refined aesthetic sensibility to the project, ensuring every line and finish was meticulously calculated down to the millimeter. This attention to detail introduces a subtle tension, bringing a new richness to the living environment.
Furniture Designed to Enhance the Space
Furniture plays a crucial role in defining the quality of time spent in the home. In this project, we planned and custom-made original furniture (a dining table and chairs) to perfectly fit the space from the architectural planning stage. The round-shaped furniture contrasts with the boxy architecture, bringing rhythm to the room. By incorporating furniture and appliances into the overall cost plan from the start, the project achieves a balanced distribution of expenses, maintaining a high level of quality throughout the living space.
By not only designing the space but also the time spent within it, and by ensuring a continuous attention to detail throughout, the house achieves a sculptural, three-dimensional quality. This is a home that blends practicality and elegance, enriching the everyday experience with a refined artistic touch.
