This project is a health-conscious cafe and restaurant. The core brief called for a space that is natural and distinctive, yet understated—striking without shouting. The designer interpreted this by weaving together nature, geometry, and tranquility, creating a wellness cafe that bridges 'earth' and 'sky,' seamlessly connecting them as one, true to its name, Cloud Nine. Amidst the density of Hat Yai's urban context, how wonderful would it be to have a sanctuary where we can leave the hustle and bustle behind and truly restore both body and mind? This is the opening chapter of Cloud Nine, a health-conscious cafe and restaurant project envisioned to deliver that very experience through architecture.
The client’s key brief demanded a seamless fluidity with nature—a design that stands out yet remains humble, embodying a subtle, sophisticated beauty that does not need to "shout." The architectural team began by interpreting "simplicity" through basic geometric forms—triangles, squares, and circles—deconstructing and rearranging them to form a unique architectural language. Given the site constraints of being surrounded by dense residential buildings, the designer chose the "circle" as the core concept to define the boundary, enveloping the space and shielding it from the chaotic outside world.
Rather than creating a feeling of confinement, this enclosing wall fosters a sense of "Pleasant Solitude" within. The voids are intentionally positioned to guide the eye from the "earth" up toward the "sky" above, seamlessly uniting the dimensions of the space in perfect harmony with the project's name, Cloud Nine. A major challenge of this project lay in the structural engineering. Due to the building’s curved silhouettes and clean lines, the craftsmanship required exceptional meticulousness in casting and finishing the reinforced concrete to achieve the smoothest planes possible. In terms of materials, the designer chose a bright color palette that evokes warmth, comfort, and humility.
The building functions as a master canvas, allowing natural light and shadow to paint changing hues throughout the day. Beyond serves as a perfect, camera-ready backdrop for visitors, these bright tones also vividly accentuate the green of the trees and the azure of the sky. Design Detail: The exterior walls feature a custom texture with linear patterns inspired by tree bark and horizons. This softens the rigidity of the concrete planes and adds depth when caught by the sunlight. Ultimately, Cloud Nine is more than just a typical health cafe or restaurant; it is a piece of architecture thoughtfully crafted in every dimension.
From the selection of materials that respect nature, to the configuration of outdoor spaces that foster human interaction, and the integration of open areas that allow the architecture to "breathe" alongside its environment. It stands as a clear testament that sustainable beauty does not come from over-ornamentation, but from creating a space where humans, nature, and architecture aesthetically dissolve into one.
