The Harvey Nichols Activewear store in Riyadh is conceived as a spatial translation of movement—where the energy of the body is extended into architecture. Rather than treating retail as a static display environment, the project frames activewear within a continuous field of motion, reflection, and interaction. The core design intent was to create an immersive environment that reflects the dynamism of contemporary active lifestyles while maintaining the refined identity of Harvey Nichols.
The conceptual framework is driven by the idea of “active stillness”—a tension between motion and pause. This is expressed through a central sculptural installation that anchors the space: a staged composition of mannequins captured mid-movement, set within a mirrored ceiling system that multiplies perspectives and dissolves spatial boundaries. The installation acts as both a visual focal point and a conceptual device, transforming the act of browsing into a performative experience.
Spatially, the store is organized as a sequence of zones that flow intuitively from public to more private functions. A generous main retail hall accommodates flexible product displays, while peripheral zones house footwear, accessories, and fitting rooms. Circulation is deliberately open and non-linear, allowing customers to navigate freely, encouraging exploration rather than directing it. The cashier and service areas are subtly integrated to maintain spatial continuity.
Materiality plays a key role in reinforcing the concept. A restrained palette of stone, brushed metal, and translucent glass blocks establishes a balance between solidity and lightness. Reflective surfaces—particularly the mirrored ceiling—extend the vertical dimension of the space, amplifying light and creating a sense of immersion. Custom display systems, including perforated metal fixtures and illuminated rails, are designed to be both functional and visually lightweight.
In response to the site within a larger retail environment, the storefront is conceived as a transparent threshold, blurring the boundary between mall circulation and interior space. The elevated platform and layered display elements create depth and invite engagement from the outside. The project’s key innovation lies in its ability to merge scenography with retail logic—where architecture, display, and narrative operate as a single system. The result is an experience-driven environment that positions activewear not just as product, but as a lifestyle in motion.
