Within the leafy suburban context of Colonel Light Gardens, a tactile assembly of State Heritage bungalows lines the streetscape. Briefed to provide additional space for a young and growing family, the proposal presented a series of considerations in balancing heritage sensitivity with a contemporary architectural response.
The addition seeks to complement the existing heritage forms through a restrained material palette and low-scale composition, while minimising visual impact and overlooking within the conservative suburban context. The generous site dimensions allow for a sprawling single-storey form that optimises northern orientation and natural light, whilst elongating the internal program through a grouping of defined spaces that maintain visual connection to one another.
A consistent proportion is maintained throughout the plan, enabling an efficient structural layout and clear architectural rhythm. This order is celebrated both internally and externally through open gabled volumes anchored by minimalist flat roof forms. A series of emphasised horizontal members span the width of each space, invoking a sense of compression and intimacy, while moments between these thresholds reveal the expressive raked volumes above.
Externally, the facades are clad in blackened rough-sawn timber, grounded by a rustic white masonry plinth that wraps the perimeter of the addition. Natural hardwood feature cladding and screening soften the interface to the adjoining street and carefully curate natural light and privacy to the interior spaces.
