Education Campus Willi Resetarits
Vienna, Austria
2024

There is a new educational center in Floridsdorf: the Willi Resetarits educational institution in Hinaysgasse. The campus school for 1,000 children extends the “Floridsdorf education mile” and combines a kindergarten, elementary school, secondary school, music school and youth center under one roof. The result is a place that is not only functional, but also inspiring—for children, young people and the entire neighborhood.

The new building for the Hinaysgasse educational facility extends the generously designed “Floridsdorf Education Mile”, which is developing from the train station along Franklin- straße. The school combines seven kindergarten groups, 33 primary and secondary school classes, a music school and a youth center in a single building. The building volume is arranged in such a way that it blends in with the closed structure of the surrounding area. Along the Education Mile, the first floor recedes and thus extends the wide street space to the forecourt.

Along Franklinstrasse and Hinaysgasse the building is designed as a four- storey building, towards Kahlgasse, the building steps down contextually to two storeys. This building structure creates a large, coherent open space. The entire open space is seen as a space for experiences and adventures that is avail- able to pupils and kindergarten children. Depending on their current needs, everyone can find a place to linger, play, learn or relax. The terraces on floors 1 to 3 are assigned to the educational areas and extend their functionality to the outside. Not only are all the roofs greened, but all the terraces also have green focal points, and the street-side facades are also intensively greened.

The school is designed as a cluster school in which educational spaces are grouped around open multifunctional zones. In the floor plan, educational spaces and complemen- tary open room areas form an alternating, chessboard-like basic pattern. The room layout promotes a productive and flexible connection of rooms and thus creates attractive room sequences and room situations. The regular opening of the structure strengthens the connection to the outside and allows plenty of natural light to flow into the clusters.

Free Space at All Levels

The school with its wooden facade blends harmoniously into its surroundings. Along Frank- linstrasse and Hinaysgasse, the building has four storeys, while it slopes down to two storeys towards the quieter Kahlgasse. This intelligent architecture creates a coherent outdoor area, which is designed as a generous adventure space for the children. There is plenty of space for playing, learning, relaxing and simply enjoying time outdoors. A particular highlight of the new school are the terraces on the upper floors, which are created by the chessboard-like arrangement of the rooms.

They extend the learning and play areas to the outside and offer pupils and kindergarten children open space in the middle of the city. The green areas (roof, terraces, facade) contribute to a pleasant atmosphere and improve the microclimate.

Focus on Sustainability

The school also sets standards in the area of sustainability. A photovoltaic system provides environmentally friendly energy and the use of geothermal energy through building component activation contributes to the cooling and temperature control of the rooms. Intelligent building technology, such as the use of rainwater, ensures that the building is operated in an environmentally friendly and efficient manner. The greenery supports the City of Vienna’s “Urban Heat Island” strategy and to cool the surroundings and improve the climate. Nesting boxes for swifts, bats and jackdaws have been integrated into the facade and on the roof for the benefit of wildlife.

A Place to Live and Learn

The new educational facility in Hinaysgasse is far more than just a school building. It is a lively place of learning that impresses with its well thought-out architecture and sustainable construction. With its open design and wide range of uses, this school will become a real focal point in Floridsdorf—a classroom with a terrace that sets standards.
