Luna Beach Club
Tabanan, Indonesia
2024

Perched on the cliffs of Nyanyi Beach in Tabanan, Bali, Luna Beach Club was envisioned as a destination that combines dining, entertainment, wellness, art, and exploration within a highly immersive coastal landscape. The design brief called for an iconic beach club and events venue that would inspire wonder, adventure, and discovery while responding sensitively to the site's topography and ocean views. Drawing from Fibonacci geometry and the golden ratio, the masterplan establishes a network of interconnected destinations that guide movement across the site. The positioning and form of each building were informed by geometric relationships, creating a spatial experience that feels both intuitive and organic while strengthening connections between architecture, landscape, and sea.

Rather than concentrating activity within a single structure, the project unfolds as a collection of destinations embedded throughout the cliffside terrain. At the heart of the development is the main beach club, a vortex-like building that serves as the primary venue for dining, entertainment, workshops, and social gatherings. Constructed from bamboo and basalt, the structure is wrapped in layers of woven shading elements that soften daylight, provide thermal comfort, and transform the building into a glowing landmark after sunset. Conceived with a feminine architectural expression, it is balanced by the presence of a lighthouse tower elsewhere within the masterplan. Adjacent to the beach club is a lagoon-style pool overlooking the ocean, which connects to the underground Utopia VIP Club through an 11-metre river slide, introducing a playful element to the visitor experience.

Throughout the site, a series of complementary attractions encourage exploration and discovery. Elevated pods constructed from recycled materials weave through the forest canopy, incorporating tunnels, nets, and climbing routes that interact with the existing trees. In a quieter corner of the site, Elysium provides a contemplative setting for yoga, meditation, weddings, and ceremonial gatherings. Gardens, sculptures, intimate event spaces, and outdoor social venues are integrated throughout the landscape, creating a layered experience that accommodates both everyday visitors and large-scale festivals, performances, and exhibitions while maintaining a strong relationship with the site's vegetation, microclimate, and natural landforms.

The architecture was conceived to emerge from the landscape through the use of innovative yet environmentally conscious materials. Bamboo, basalt reinforcement, recycled timber, natural stone, lime render, green roofs, and composite structural insulated panels (SIPs) were selected for their ability to minimise environmental impact while enabling expressive organic forms. These materials were shaped into flowing geometries that provide shade, shelter, and passive climatic performance while reinforcing a tactile connection to nature.

Realising the project required extensive research, prototyping, and collaboration between designers, engineers, and construction teams. The complexity of the geometry, combined with the use of emerging sustainable construction methods, demanded rigorous testing and on-site training. Among the project's key technical achievements is the world's first combined bamboo-and-basalt structural system, developed for the beach club's double-curved roof structure. Elysium and the cave pool further demonstrate the potential of SIP construction to create complex forms without relying on conventional concrete systems. Through its integration of innovative materials, advanced engineering, and site-responsive planning, Luna Beach Club establishes a new model for experiential hospitality architecture that celebrates both environmental stewardship and a spirit of exploration
