something that is targeted to travelers on a budget: something that is fun, colorful, playful, bright, cozy, cheerful, and casual. The design proves that one need not use expensive materials to make a splash.

A number of cost-effective strategies were used to make the effect. On the one hand, Ester Bruzkus Architekten Schwedter Straße 34a 10435 Berlin +49 30 235 979 40 Ester Bruzkus Architekten-Ibis Budget-07 Team: Ester Bruzkus, Peter Greenberg, Stephanie Meine, Ana Knežević, Arianna Petrulli, Svenja Bechtel, Iwetta Ullnboom, Elisabeth Strump, Martina Durrant, Natalie Ziesemer, Ekaterina Miroshnichenko the concrete ceiling and walls are selectively exposed - using what is there instead of adding extra layers. Ceiling-mounted services (HVAC, lighting, acoustical panels) are treated as an integral part of the overall composition instead of being completely hidden or completely exposed. Acoustical clouds with round ends wrap the ceiling and fold on the wall; linear lights run vertically as well as horizontally

A subtle geometry also integrates different materials and colors: circles and half circles are used throughout at different scales. One example is the buffet cabinet in the breakfast room: round lights and an MDF arch combine to create a playful atmosphere. The breakfast EBA_Ibis_Axonometric T he axonometric view of the entrance lobby shows the overall volumetric and color relationships. A sliding translucent screen (supported on the yellow beam) separates the waiting area from the breakfast area, which is open to a small green terrace at the rear. At one end of the breakfast area a brown built-in piece of cabinetry acts as both the servery and the screen between the eating area and the elevator lobby. room is separated from the lobby by a sliding screen made from translucent polycarbonate sheets. The lobby has a sitting area for guests that includes built-in and loose furnishings.

The material palette combines exposed concrete, colorful painted surfaces, integrally colored MDF, mirrors, terrazzo, shiny metals, and painted spun-wood acoustical boards. A custom carpet is printed with yellow, gray, and black pattern, suggesting a pop terrazzo that forms an ensemble with the darker floor and lighter-toned built-in cabinetry like the reception desks.

Upstairs, the corridors leading to the guest room have shadows of the arched doorways printed on the carpet. It is a playful gesture, but also one that recalls the arched covered public walkways that are characteristic of old Münster. Inside the guest rooms, the yellow of the corridor comes into the room just far enough to envelop the bathing area – a large round mirror overlaps the yellow area and the exposed concrete wall. The patterned printed carpet changes color at this point too. The effect is stylish and fun, bright and economical.

.“The small budget opened doors for all sorts of non-standard design ideas.

“We tried to leave the shell alone and exposed and to add just enough to contrast cool with warm.

“We wanted to make something that was playful and inexpensive - full of lightness and color

“We like to mix and match in unexpected combinations”

Ester Bruzkus Architekten was founded in Berlin in 2002 and has extensive international experience in design at all scales: from the design of furniture, special apartments and offices, to international cinemas, restaurants and hotels.

We like working with straight lines, precise planning, material differences, and plenty of surprises.

We like contrasts of thick and thin, sharp and soft, curved and straight, rough and smooth, common and opulent, colorful and restrained, playful and well-resolved.

We like projects that create a dialogue of space and light, materiality and color, existing constraints and new opportunities - and especially a synergy between the needs of the space, the client, and the aspirations of great design.

We like boxes within boxes, rooms within rooms, the blurring of inside and out, material contrasts, and surprising color combinations.

We like collecting - we collect images and colors that speak to our heart and combine them in our own way.

We find inspiration in lots of places... old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows...
