Ciutat Vella Apartment

Ciutat Vella is not toured; it is discovered. Within a relatively small area, Valencia unfolds more than two thousand years of layered history, like strata of time coexisting on a single stage. Narrow streets, unexpected squares, Roman remains, medieval traces, and modernist gestures engage in a dialogue that is as fragile as it is fascinating. Every corner reveals a different chapter of the city’s evolution, where architecture becomes a living archive of successive cultures and ways of inhabiting the same place.

Today, this historic heart beats strongly: residents, traditional shops, museums, cafés, bars, and travelers share a vibrant urban landscape where contemporary life intertwines naturally with memory. The richness of Ciutat Vella lies not only in its monuments but also in its everyday atmosphere, where the passage of time can be perceived in the textures, proportions, and imperfections of its buildings.

It is within this context that the Ciutat Vella Apartment is set, inside a residential building dating from 1890 that, from the very beginning, posed a compelling challenge: to preserve without freezing, to restore without erasing. Rather than recreating an idealized version of the past, the project embraces the existing architecture and allows its authentic character to remain visible.

Nolla mosaic floors, delicate wrought ironwork, original moldings, century-old doors, and remnants of polychrome paintings emerge as silent witnesses of another era. These protected elements are not merely preserved; they establish the rhythm and identity of the intervention, becoming the starting point for every architectural decision. Their presence gives the home a sense of continuity that could never be replicated in a newly built space.

The apartment is conceived with a wabi-sabi sensibility, where beauty arises from imperfection, from what has been lived, and from what time has gently transformed. Instead of concealing traces of age, the project celebrates them, allowing materials to express their natural qualities and history.

Natural materials such as travertine, wood, lime plaster, linen, and wool provide a profound sense of calm, warmth, and honesty. Textures speak louder than colours, while carefully filtered natural light enhances every surface, creating an atmosphere of serenity and quiet sophistication. The result is an authentic interior, free from unnecessary artifice, where every element contributes to a harmonious whole.

This narrative continues in the furnishings. Together with the owners, passionate collectors and lovers of design, a carefully curated selection of vintage pieces from Nekonato Gallery has been woven into the project, coexisting naturally with artworks by CLC Arte and contemporary designs such as chairs by New Works and lighting by Venicem. Past and present observe one another, respect one another, and ultimately enrich each other.

The dialogue is further complemented by bespoke furniture designed specifically for the apartment as an extension of the architecture itself. Material, proportion, and function merge seamlessly, creating pieces that integrate discreetly into the space while reinforcing its calm and timeless character.

The Ciutat Vella Apartment is, ultimately, a story of respect. A serene conversation between heritage and contemporaneity, between craftsmanship and modern living. It is a tribute to the architectural legacy of Valencia and to the imperfect beauty that only time can create.
