Sensorium Tropical Shelter
2023

Located on the road to Echo Beach in Canggu, Bali, Sensorium Tropical Sanctuary is a serene and peaceful dining space. The concept integrates architecture, nature, and wellness, creating a community hub where people from diverse backgrounds can gather and enjoy specialty cuisine while overlooking the rice fields.

Nestled between a small creek and rice fields, the architecture is envisioned as a humble shelter rather than an imposing structure. Instead of dominating the landscape, it seeks to blend harmoniously with nature. By gently lifting and curving the roof like a piece of paper, we create a continuous and porous space underneath, forming the heart of the sanctuary while seamlessly connecting to its supporting areas. The kitchen, positioned near the main entrance, is designed to be open to the dining area, allowing the chef to personally greet each guest, reinforcing the experience of being welcomed into a home rather than a conventional restaurant.

Upon arrival, guests walk through a winding path (jalan berliku) leading to a foyer, where a skylight pond casts caustic reflections, creating an immersive, meditative space. This interplay of light and water serves as a ritual of cleansing, offering a moment of tranquillity before stepping into the sanctuary, away from the bustling energy of Canggu. Adjacent to the foyer, a brick tower houses a small pastry shop, providing a cozy waiting area. The highlight of the space, however, is the outdoor deck facing the rice fields, where guests can fully embrace Bali’s pleasant weather.

The design emphasizes locally sourced materials from Bali. The overall palette features warm beige concrete and locally crafted beige bricks, made from a blend of indigenous soil. To enhance natural light, glass bricks are incorporated, allowing light to filter through dynamically throughout the day. The outdoor decking is constructed from ironwood, chosen not only for its durability but also for its subtle creaking sound, which encourages a sense of mindfulness when entering the space. Solid teak furniture, combined with infused cigarette butt waste in concrete mixtures, highlights our commitment to sustainable material innovation..

This project is a collaboration between architects and the chef-owner, seeking to redefine tropical dining. Unlike conventional enclosed restaurants, we embrace an open yet sheltered environment, inspired by Indonesia’s indigenous vernacular architecture, particularly the "gubuk"—a simple rural shelter. By incorporating a large shaded area, we create comfortable outdoor spaces that remain functional despite the region’s high sun exposure and frequent rainfall. The open front and rear facades allow for natural cross-ventilation, ensuring a breathable and refreshing atmosphere.

Ultimately, this project serves as a prototype, bridging vernacular wisdom with contemporary architecture, paving the way for limitless future developments in tropical design.
