MP House
Trancoso, Brazil
2024

Set within a residential condominium, Casa MP was conceived as a vacation residence for a family, while also accommodating the possibility of short-term rentals. Its material palette draws from the natural and cultural character of the region, combining timber, wood-shingle roofing, rough-textured plaster, burnished concrete, and pergolas made of round eucalyptus poles. Together, these elements establish the identity of the house and strengthen its connection with the surrounding landscape.

At the main entrance, a central pergola provides shelter while marking the transition into the residence and framing the front door. From the moment of arrival, the swimming pool is visible along the same visual axis, establishing an immediate relationship between the interior spaces and the outdoors. On this façade, a vertical screen composed of timber boards was designed to visually merge with the entrance door when closed. The element controls daylight and ventilation while preserving the continuity of the architectural composition.

The sloping site overlooks a wooded common area within the condominium and played a central role in defining the building’s placement. The residence was positioned slightly below street level to reduce the apparent scale of its front elevation. Despite the extensive program and built area, this strategy allows the volumes to sit more discreetly within the landscape.

The residence is arranged in three distinct volumes. The first, positioned toward the front of the site, contains two suites beneath a waterproofed concrete slab roof filled with expanded clay to improve thermal performance. The central volume accommodates the main communal spaces—including the living room, kitchen, and service areas—and opens directly onto the pool terrace. At the rear, the third volume takes advantage of the natural slope to extend across two levels. The primary suite occupies the upper floor and opens onto a generous veranda facing the surrounding forest. Its guardrail was designed as an integrated bench, expanding the ways in which the space can be used for rest and contemplation.

Although the bedrooms are distributed among separate volumes, they share the same circulation principle. Each room is accessed from a covered outdoor deck that also functions as a veranda. More than a connecting route, this circulation encourages a closer relationship with the landscape, creates informal spaces for gathering and contemplation, and establishes continuity between the different parts of the house without requiring a direct internal connection. The arrangement reinforces outdoor living as an essential part of the residential experience.

Round timber slats contribute to the formal unity of the project. Used both beneath the pergola roof and as vertical elements on the upper floor, they filter sunlight, frame views, and provide privacy to the interior spaces.

The architecture firm was also responsible for the interior design, prioritizing furniture produced by local suppliers and craftspeople. Mostly defined by neutral tones and contemporary lines, the furnishings create a refined contrast with the natural textures and handcrafted elements, contributing to the warm and understated character of the residence.
