Green View
Netrokona, Bangladesh
2023

Located in Netrakona, a district 150 km north of Dhaka, Green View is a climate-responsive multifamily residential building that establishes a strong identity within its locality, earning the nickname "Lalbari" (Red Building) from the community. Situated on a challenging west-facing, diagonally aligned plot near the district bus stand and vast BADC paddy fields, the project navigates its site constraints through climate-resilient and context-driven architecture.

The building features a dual-functional layout: the first three floors host rental units, while the top two levels are reserved for the landowner. To combat the harsh western sun and respect the diagonal site boundaries, an orthogonal plan was implemented. Service zones with solid walls are strategically placed along the west facade to act as thermal buffers, while deep, repetitive verandas wrap around the west and south. These verandas provide shade from tropical glare, protection from heavy downpours, and promote passive cross-ventilation.

On the owner’s duplex apartment, open terraces extend from the living and dining areas, seamlessly merging indoor and outdoor spaces. A double-height volume with a glass roof invites the sky and rain into the core of the home, fostering visual connectivity between levels. The programming concludes on the roof with a small study and a fully landscaped garden that offers panoramic city views.

The exterior is defined by red tile bricks, which serve a dual purpose: they enhance the building’s thermal mass to reduce indoor heat absorption and create a strong aesthetic integrity with the regional context. The interplay of the solid western facade and brick-clad planes lends the structure a sense of monumentality.

By integrating planter boxes on every veranda and establishing a lush roof garden, the design naturally insulates the structure, significantly reducing heat gain and overall energy consumption.

While architectural fidelity is often a challenge outside capital cities, Green View stands as a successful precedent. Through an honest design approach, rigorous multi-disciplinary coordination, and meticulous follow-up, the project demonstrates that high-quality, sustainable architecture is fully achievable in regional contexts.
